What we learn!

Students in Wylie Elementary school study artists from the past. They
learn about the impact that those artists had on trends in art.

Pablo Picasso
Third graders read about the childhood of Pablo Picasso. They learned that he looked at the world differently. They were introduced to a kind of art known as Cubism, a style that he championed. Using closed geometric and abstract shapes, they drew with glue gel and then colored chalks. They created vibrant portraits in that Cubist style.

Jasper Johns
Third graders learned about the Pop Art of Jasper Johns. Looking at his painting"Numbers in Color", they created a graphic work, also using number imagery as their theme. They used many numeric combinations that described them, such as their day of birth, year, favorite number etc. They varied the color and placement of the elements so that some areas receded and some emerged.

African Masks
Students in the Wylie school investigate the arts of many cultures. They learned about masks from several tribes in Africa. They discussed the purposes of those masks and the many materials that were used to make them. They designed their own using plaster, paints and decorative materials for embellishments.

Asian Landscape Paintings
Fourth graders learn about Asian landscape painting and they use traditional materials, including bamboo brushes and inks, to capture the essence of the land with watercolor washes, and simple gestures.
